This Dubrovnik family activity guide includes local recommendations on family friendly activities & top things to do with kids so you can have an unforgettable holiday the whole family will enjoy and talk about.

Top things to do in Dubrovnik with kids:

6. Explore the Old Town
7. Challenge yourself at Cadmos Village
8. Take a day trip to Lopud Island
9. Enjoy Valamar Summer Nights
10. SunGarden Marco Polo Club

Going on a family holiday in Dubrovnik seems like a fun experience, but only if you make sure everyone gets their share of fun 🙂 While exploring the Old Town and doing all the regular touristy stuff might sound fun to you, your kids might rather do something else, especially if you are visiting Dubrovnik in the summer.

First of all, the locals do whatever they can to stay away from the old town because of the notorious crowds and heat that comes with the summer months. Therefore, most of the locations we recommend to visit in Dubrovnik with kids are located outside of the Old Town. For more insider info, also check out Dubrovnik travel tips from locals at the page bottom.

If you are on holidays in Dubrovnik with kids, don’t miss these family friendly activities your kids might actually be excited about 🙂

1. Play an Interactive Escape Game

Engage in a fun family challenge - an activity to remember

Escape room game is a real-life adventure game for all ages & no. 1 fun thing to do in Dubrovnik (as can be seen on TripAdvisor, reviewed by real travellers).

This exciting challenge takes place in air-conditioned rooms, so it makes a great activity in case of bad weather, rain or hot temperatures. You can choose from two missions, each being family-friendly (without violence or horror), and requiring no previous knowledge. In other words, all you need to play the game is teamwork, creativity & logic. In case it gets too hard, ask the game master to help with hints.

2. Take the Cable Car to Mount Srdj

See the stunning views over the Pearl of the Adriatic

Take the cable car up the mount Srdj so you can enjoy a bird’s eye perspective of the Old Town. You will be rewarded with the best panoramic views, and maybe encounter a donkey or two.

In case the 4 minute ride up is not exciting enough for your young explorers, take them to buggy safari, best suited for adventurous teenagers.

3. Hang out with animals in Honey Valley

Discover a little paradise for children and adults

Escape to this little paradise located on Mount Srdj so you can enjoy the fresh air and beautiful nature far away from all the noise. As an illustration of things to do, hang out with the animals on the farm: meet the horses, donkeys and sheep, or sit in the shade of the cherry orchard and have a picnic while your kids roam around freely.

For the more active, there are a dozen ponies and horses eagerly awaiting for your children, to take them for a horse riding session.

Ultimately, whatever you decide to do in this little kingdom, we are sure you will not regret coming!

4. Take a 1/2 day trip to Lokrum Island

Escape the city crowd and heat to this green paradise
Short 15 min boat ride away from the Old Town lies another natural paradise – Lokrum.  This beautiful island is a perfect escape from the city heat and crowds since it’s filled with trees and shady pathways.

See the peacocks and bunnies running freely around. They are not too afraid of people so if you take some food you can make new friends. 🙂

Go swimming in the dead sea, snorkeling and exploring the sea life, see the botanical garden or just hide in the shades of the forest and enjoy the serenity of this island. It’s a true gem!

5. Take a stroll in Lapad Bay

Icecream + trampoline + sandy beach + park = happy kids 🙂

The only sandy beach in Dubrovnik is in Lapad  Bay. Here you can make sand castles, play in the nearby park (with swings, slides, seesaws… ) or play picigin – most popular croatian summer game in water. Since no cars are allowed, you can take a stress-free stroll down the promenade, have an ice-cream or pancakes and let your kids roam around freely.

If you get hungry or thirsty, there are plenty objects offering refreshments and food.

Bonus idea: Take the charming path by the water all the way from Lapad Bay to Babin kuk. This green area is ideal for playing games with a ball, riding bicycles or playing table tennis and mini golf in the park.

6. Explore the Old Town

City Walls, Aquarium, Maritime Museum

The entire Old Town is kid-friendly as no cars are allowed on the streets so you can take a stress-free stroll with your little ones.

You can take the kids to explore the forts and bastions of the city walls. Surely they will enjoy the beautiful views watching the ships pass by.

Once within the walls, visit the Aquarium, showing diverse Adriatic flora and fauna. See lobsters, octopus, seahorses, sea urchins, sea cucumbers, shells, crabs… Though modest, its cool location in the stone vaults of  St. John’s Fortress makes it a nice escape from the crowds and heat of the city.

While there, you can also visit the Maritime Museum, exhibiting old maps, sailing equipment, ship models from different times…

Excitement for the whole family

Adventure park in Konavle, Cadmos Village, is fun for the whole family. Stay in the first treehouse in Croatia and enjoy fresh air on a 7m high open terrace and beautiful views of Konavle valley. Try homemade specialties and local wines in the family restaurant.

Adrenaline lovers will enjoy park features and activities: 4 zip lines, giant swing, slingshot, fields for archery and paintball, sack jumping, pulling the rope, biking…

8. Take a day trip to Lopud island

one of Croatia's best beaches

Take a 1 hr boat ride from Gruz port to Lopud island (check the daily departures schedule) and enjoy the nature and serenity of this carless island. Take a stroll to the other side of the island or hire a golf cart to discover  the best sandy beach in the whole county – Sunj beach.

Kids will love this beautiful sandy beach, because it is very shallow so they will have plenty of space to run and splash around. Take snorkeling gear, rent a kayak or pedal boats, swim and dive or just hide in the shade of parasols or the local bar, while your kids roam around joyously.

Dubrovnik travel tips

Insider advice by the locals
  • If visiting Dubrovnik old town in the summer, plan to go early in the morning or late afternoon to avoid the heat.

  • It’s best to avoid being in the sun for too long, especially between  11 am 3 pm when it’s the hottest so you dont get burnt or sun sick.  The Old Town stone can make that heat slightly more intense.

  • Avoid the huge crowds in old town on days there are a lot of cruise ships in port. Check the cruise ship schedule & plan activities outside of the old town for the time the ships are in port.
